For Lisa McCallum, teaching stretches far beyond the chalkboard at St Therese, Primary Mascot.
The Year 6 teacher has orchestrated engaging learning methods for her classes using interactive whiteboards and has been awarded for her smart approach winning the 2007 SMART'S World teachers' Day Video Contest today.
Lisa McCallum from St Therese Primary in Mascot is the first Australian to win the second annual global contest from over 100 teachers who entered from across 23 countries around the world.
The Year 6 teacher will fly to London next year on an all-inclusive trip to attend the world's largest education technology trade show, BETT 2008, after submitting an entertaining video narrated by the Kindergarten class, showing the students' enthusiasm for learning to read and count using the interactive whiteboards.
"This week, in my Year 6 class, one of the tasks was to get the students to be the teachers and create their own classroom lesson using the SMART notebook," Miss McCallum said.
"It was a way for them to demonstrate their learning to the rest of the class."
The international contest that marks World Teachers' Day, aims to showcase how teachers' efforts are improving student learning outcomes in the new 21st century classroom.
Director of Curriculum at Sydney's Catholic Education Office, Seamus O'Grady, says over 500 interactive whiteboards across Sydney's Catholic schools have been rolled out in recent years.
"They are a critical element in reshaping teaching across our school system which is increasingly adopting the new technology," he said.
Further details including a video of the winning entry can be obtained from interactive whiteboard.
