Teaching

Is teaching for you?

Teaching is a challenging but rewarding career for men and women who enjoy working with young people. After parents, teachers are probably the most influential adults in young people's lives. Good teachers can make a big difference to young people's lives, and help to make a better world.

Why teach in a Catholic School?

Catholic schools are founded on the person of Jesus Christ and are enlivened by the Gospel. They support parents in bringing up their children as Catholics, and provide children with a quality education in a strong pastoral environment.

Sydney's Catholic schools are schools with a mission: celebrating being Catholic in Australia, ensuring quality teaching and learning, and making a difference in our world.

Becoming a teacher

Both Primary and Secondary teachers are trained at university. Teacher training courses normally span four years and allow specialisation in Primary or Secondary education.

Primary teachers in Catholic schools usually teach Religious Education, and need to be accredited to do so. Training at campuses of Australian Catholic University includes courses which provide this accreditation to teach Religious Education.

For those who do their teacher training (Primary or Secondary) at other universities, accreditation to teach Religious Education can be attained by undertaking specific courses of study.

Being employed in a Catholic School

Teaching positions in Sydney Catholic Schools are usually advertised in major metropolitan and regional newspapers as well as on this website. Teachers apply to schools in which they wish to teach. If successful, they are employed by the Principal of the school, which is part of the Sydney Archdiocesan school system. Catholic teachers enjoy the same salaries as teachers in Government schools. They have the advantages of working in an environment characterised by:

  • shared values and belief system
  • a common mission
  • high levels of parent support flowing from parents' decision to choose a Catholic school and to make a significant financial commitment.
