1/9/2008 - School merger to provide better learning environment

The relocation of Bethany College's Kogarah staff and students to the Hurstville Campus will see 270 girls from years 7 and 8 relocate to a new $16 million state-of-the-art campus this year.

The closure of the Kogarah campus marks an end to 43 years of secondary girls education at Bethany College, Kogarah since the Josephite Sisters founded St Joseph's Girls High School there in 1965.

Staff members from each campus have been preparing for the relocation discussing teaching strategies for the new one school site, which will include a new middle school structure.

The upgraded campus at Hurstville, which has been a long term building project over five stages, has expanded facilities for students that include a new front entry, administration area and more specialist classrooms such as PD/H/PE, Performing Arts, Technology and Science.

Principal Frances Warner said that the Commonwealth Capital Grants contribution has helped make it easier for the students to relocate and learn in a familiar environment and in the same community.

"We hope to develop the school with one exciting future as the students move through the school from year to year," she said.

"I'm looking forward to working with a great team of people within a well-structured organisation which places children at the heart of all they do."

A special commemorative liturgy was held at Bethany College, Kogarah site last Sunday, 24th August, followed by afternoon tea and a display of memorabilia.

During the Liturgy, Mrs Warner said that the closure holds "a place of special meaning to many."

"For about four to five thousand young girls, it has been special because they came here to begin their secondary schooling."

Past and present students and principals attended the ceremony, including Sr Anne Derwin, the Congregational leader of the Sisters of St Joseph.
