One hundred bright mathematically-minded students from seven Catholic schools in the Sutherland Shire competed in a Mathematical challenge with a difference at Our Lady of Mercy College, Burraneer on 6 August.
The top 12 Mathematics students from each school came from De La Salle College, Cronulla; Our Lady of Mercy College, Burraneer; De La Salle College, Caringbah; St Aloysius' Primary, Cronulla; St Frances De Sales' Primary, Woolooware; Our Lady of Fatima Primary, Caringbah and Our Lady Star of the Sea Primary, Miranda.
The students, ranging from ages 10 to 17, were split into teams and were to be put to the challenge by 702 ABC presenter and Mathematician Adam Spencer.
"The younger students were particularly impressive - often beating their older peers to the questions that required quick and accurate calculations," said Eastern Shire Liaison Officer Catherine Sip, who was delighted with the result of the day.
"Their concept of number, and ability to use their minds without a calculator, was inspiring.
"All schools should be very proud of their students, and a great time was had by all teams," she said.
The enrichment day was run in the spirit of the Olympics, with teams competing in challenges including counting races, beat the buzzer contests, probability dice games and a fraction frenzy.
Adam Spencer from 702 ABC spent the morning mingling with the pupils and inspiring them to pursue their passion for mathematics.
Ms Sip said that the winning team learned a lot about team work, and working together to solve problems.
"It is all about kids using their brains in a great way," she added.
