16/10/2008 - Catholic Schools Respond to Financial Crisis.

Catholic schools in Sydney are planning to reduce the cost of education to parents.

The impact of the current global financial crisis on families was highlighted in a recent letter sent to school Principals by Brother Kelvin Canavan , Executive Director of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of Sydney.

In his letter, Brother Kelvin acknowledges that increasing numbers of parents may find themselves under significant strain as the economy slows down and the employment market shrinks.

"Families with children in Catholic schools will not escape the effects of a changed economic environment," he wrote.

He emphasised that Catholic schools will need a well considered strategy to address changing circumstances.

"It is essential that we continue to provide for the enrolment of students from families experiencing financial difficulties."

Brother Kelvin also asked systemic school Principals to reassess various local fees and charges related to activities like excursions, films, outings and end-of-year functions to ensure that costs to parents are kept to a minimum.

"Book lists and other curriculum fees will also require a fresh look if we are to ensure that Catholic schools remain affordable for families in these tough times," he said.

He alerted Principals to the possibility that some parents could find themselves unemployed for the first time, and may be embarrassed and even reluctant to make this known to the schools.

"Staff will need to be on the lookout for signs of financial stress, and exercise great compassion and sensitivity."

The role of Catholic school leaders in supporting those families hit hard by the current circumstances will be very significant.
