4/9/2008 - Grandparents' Day Reflection

Working in and visiting a number of different schools makes life very busy and rewarding for teachers.

As in most schools we celebrate many occasions during the school year and I would like to take this opportunity to share my memories of last Wednesday's Grandparents' Day (13th August) which was celebrated at Our Lady Star of the Sea Miranda (OLSS).

We are fortunate at OLSS to have so many grandparents who are active members of our Parish and School Community and so, the Staff and Students wanted to acknowledge their involvement, by thanking them for what they do by reflecting on the special times that they share with us and in our lives.

The celebration began with a Whole School Liturgy organised by the students in Year Five with the assistance of their Kindergarten Buddies. It was lovely to see how the Year Five Students involved their grandparents in specific roles of the Liturgy.  The Church walls were covered with pictures of grandparents and affectionate 'nicknames'.

The Powerpoint reflection showed pictures of grandparents being actively involved with the students and again these pictures were accompanied by beautiful quotes with the result that there was not a dry eye left in the Church.

Following the Liturgy the grandparents were taken to the School Hall to sing along with 'Abba' and watch the students groove to the music they had been practising over previous weeks.

The excitement of the celebration gave the grandparents a thirst so they were treated to cups of tea and also enjoyed lovely homemade goodies which were provided by our generous school families.

With grandchildren eager to show their grandparents their Library full of artwork and their classrooms our celebrated grandparents could be seen shuffling from room to room careful to split their time equally between their respective grandchildren.

Occasions such as this type of day once again affirmed my love of my job and how just one simple act of giving can mean so much to so many who are not only grandparents of our students but neighbours and elderly friends of our students who enjoy coming along and being part of our school community.
